Making Choices Activity
Learn more and help raise awareness about hard-working families in our community struggling to make ends meet.
When you were a child, did your mom ever ask you to knock on a neighbor’s door to borrow a cup of milk? Or did you play outside with the neighborhood kids, and your parents didn’t know exactly where you were every second of the day, but if you got into trouble you could bet a neighbor would tell your parents?
These days, we don’t know our neighbors quite as well. In fall 2014, Connecticut United Ways will release a report that reveals circumstances that are happening in many homes without many knowing it -- it's a reality that many of our neighbors are walking a financial tightrope. The report is called ALICE, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. ALICE includes our neighbors, friends, family members, and co-workers -- all people who contribute to the stability and success of our communities.
When all families have equal opportunities to get ahead, our whole community benefits. That's why it's important to come together and work on solutions that create lasting change now and in the future.
We are raising awareness about how our community can join together so we can all move ahead to a brighter future. We invite your employees to participate in:
Making Choices – Making Ends Meet
Making Ends Meet is an opportunity for groups of employees to experience the challenges and barriers to financial stability that many families in our community are facing. Employees will have the opportunity to work together as a “family” of five, where they will have to make tough decisions in order to make ends meet this month.
Additionally, employees will learn more about how they can partner with United Way to create lasting community changes for children and families. After an introduction and overview of instructions, employees will participate in the exercise, followed by a debrief discussion facilitated by United Way staff. (Timing is flexible, but 45-60 minutes is ideal).
