Books and Basics Kits

Is your group or organization looking for a meaningful way to make a positive impact in your community? United Way is here to help with DIY Volunteer Projects!

All you need to do is collect supplies, get your group together and assemble kits that will benefit local children and families. It’s all on your own time – and it’s that easy!

Celebrate the power of volunteerism with United Way by creating Books and Basics kits, which include a book, a related prop created by volunteers, as well as gloves and a hat.

United Way’s vision is a community where opportunities are available for every child to succeed in school and for every family to achieve financial security. One way we accomplish this is by building home libraries and ensuring that children have access to age appropriate books and basic essentials.

Help keep children warm this season while building their home libraries. Together, we’re United to do Something BIG.

Materials:

  • Individual bags to put each kit in
  • Books for children grades K-3
  • Arts and crafts supplies, such as: construction paper, markers, pipe cleaners, etc.
  • Hats for children grades K-3
  • Gloves for children grades K-3
  • Paper to write an encouraging note on

Instructions:

  • Select a book
  • Think of a prop, puppet, bookmark, game or learning activity that relates to the title and makes a child more excited about the book
  • Use arts and crafts supplies to make the book “come to life!”
  • Write an encouraging note for the child on a piece of paper
  • Place the book, craft, note, a hat and a pair of gloves in a bag
  • BONUS: take pictures of your team assembling Books and Basics and post them on social media, tagging @unitedwayinc!
