United Way Year of Caring
Celebrating the 25 years, thanks to our dedicated volunteers.
Each year, volunteers from area workplaces share their time and talents by engaging in one-time projects at various community locations such as schools and parks in central and northeastern Connecticut.
United Way Year of Caring has grown from 430 volunteers from 16 area workplaces the first year to nearly 4,000 volunteers from more than 50 area workplaces last year. Projects focus on helping children and youth succeed, ensuring families become more financially secure and providing access to basic needs, such as food and shelter. Participating in Year of Caring is an opportunity for workplaces to enhance their profile while improving on our community’s greatest challenges and involving your employees in making a difference. Customized projects are available to help achieve your workplace’s community goals.
United Way's Year of Caring projects offer many opportunities to make a difference in the communities where you live and work. Some projects include:
- Reading with and engaging children in educational activities,
- Preparing, sorting and serving meals at local shelters,
- Assisting with community cleanup projects at schools and parks, and
- Making ‘interview success kits’ at local workplaces for people in job training programs.
By working together sharing time and talents, volunteers bond and improve employee morale and improve lives for children and families right here in central and northeastern Connecticut.

Celebrate 25 with us by increasing your annual gift to United Way Community Investment. You'll create more opportunities for local children and families.
In recognition of this anniversary, this campaign year we hope to raise an additional $250,000 for a special initiative for next summer called “Meet Up and Read Up.” Together with community partners, this will provide local kids with free, healthy meals and quality enrichment programs. With those elements combined, we will be closing the summer meal gap and preventing summer learning loss. Together, we can improve more lives in our region this year. Please consider increasing your annual gift to United Way Community Investment by $25, $250 or 25 percent.
