Meet Lys
“I will never forget the night a mother and her young teen daughter arrived from a warm southern state on one of the coldest days of winter, with nothing but the clothes on their backs during a cold weather activation,” shares one of our 211 Crisis Contact Specialists. “They were freezing, hungry, exhausted and carrying the weight of survival on their shoulders.”
Meet Melissa
After losing their jobs during the pandemic, Melissa and her boyfriend were living in her car, anxious for their survival. The car battery would die and fuel tank drain as the couple attempted to keep cold winter days and nights at bay. To add to their worries, Melissa anticipated surgery to replace her fourth pacemaker. One call to 211 brought what they described, “An angel from heaven.”
Meet Jess
Jess, a single mom with a four-year-old son, was struggling to provide shelter and was in desperate need of support. When money was available, Jess was able to get a hotel room for a few nights in a row, but this wasn’t very often. Most of the time the pair ended up sleeping in Jess’s car with just blankets for warmth.
