Hartford, Conn. (May 17, 2021) – Paula S. Gilberto, President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, has announced her retirement effective December 31, 2021.
Gilberto has spent nearly 44 years working in the nonprofit sector, beginning her career at the American Red Cross prior to joining United Way in 1998 as Vice President, Community Services. She was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2007 and became President and CEO in 2016.
“I’m grateful that my career path afforded me the opportunity to put into action what I learned from my parents and family: the value of community service, the importance of relationships, and the belief that we can, and always will, do more together than we do alone,” said Gilberto.
Board Chair, Donald Allan Jr., President and Chief Financial Officer, Stanley Black & Decker, noted Gilberto’s efforts in working to form innovative partnerships that further community initiatives, advance philanthropic giving and engage people meaningfully in the community.
“Paula’s commitment to true partnership in every aspect of her leadership has made her an outstanding leader for the organization and for our community,” said Allan. “Paula’s leadership brought necessary innovation to United Way, meeting the needs of a rapidly evolving philanthropic landscape, while also forging new opportunities for growth and expansion. She has led a team of talented staff in responding to a global pandemic that has impacted so many people in our region, while also maintaining our commitment to on-going community priorities.”
Gilberto provided leadership for many of United Way’s initial public/private partnerships in grade-level reading, student achievement, financial security, and workforce development. She is also a founding member of United Way Women United which has raised awareness and resources for comprehensive financial capability services for women and families in Greater Hartford.
On a national level, Gilberto served on United Way Worldwide committees on membership standards, organizational change, and replicating education and financial security initiatives. She is also on the board of the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, a national network with more than 30 regional collaboratives that promote economic opportunity and employment.
Regionally, Gilberto serves on the board of Capital Workforce Partners and as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s New England Community Development Council and CHEFA’s Community Development Corporation Advisory Board.
United Way has engaged Diversified Search Group/Koya Partners to work with its Search Committee in appointing a new President and CEO.
