We Ignite Change
Financial instability affects families’ health and children’s education. Women United members empower each other to use our passions, ideas, expertise and resources to close gaps and create opportunities for women and families in our community.
Our Impact
Members of our Women United focus on closing financial gaps for local families experiencing extreme or working poverty. In our region, 39 percent of households often live paycheck to paycheck – unable to afford the basics or save for future goals. Due to the ongoing economic impacts from the pandemic and inflation, even more families are walking a financial tightrope due to loss of income. Women United invests in programs, initiatives and services that provide financial education including career development and coaching, job training and resumé building, match savings opportunities and other critical resources such as free tax preparation and filing through Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA).
Nearly $2.3 million has been raised through the organization’s signature fundraising event – Power of the Purse Luncheon and Silent Auction – since 2012. Funds help ensure that participants in United Way supported programs work to identify financial goals, develop realistic budgets, reduce debt, build savings, increase income and receive career coaching. Last year, we made it possible for local adults to enroll in job training programs that improved their employment potential and participate in financial management programs to create and maintain budgets, increase savings and reduce debt.

We do not stand by. We raise our voices, roll up our sleeves and leave our fingerprints on a legacy of change that benefits everyone. And as part of United Way, we have unparalleled resources to make lasting changes for local children and families. It is our nature to protect fervently and fight fiercely for the people and causes we care about. We have an innate ability to communicate and get to the underlying issue. And we have an undeniable determination to do something about it.

Invest in closing financial gaps and creating opportunities for local families to succeed: You can do so by payroll deduction through your company’s annual giving campaign.
There are several ways to give:
Visit unitedwayinc.org/donate and select Women United in the designation section.
Select Women United at the bottom of the United Way paper pledge form, or select “Women United” as your designation in your company’s electronic pledge/e-way form’s Gift Distribution page.
Search for Women United, Hartford, CT (or 5000-WLI) and hit select.
Reach out to affinitygroups@unitedwayinc.org if you do not have this designation option or if your workplace does not have an employee giving campaign.
Attending one of our events or volunteer opportunities is another great way to become involved.
